Flinders Ranges is the largest mountain range in South Australia. It is about 200 kilometers north west of Adelaide, the largest city and the capital city of South Australia. It streches about 1000 kilometers, covering about 70-80% of the state’s area with less than 1% of the population. The Ranges are broken into three major parts - southern, central and northern ranges with each region containing national park.
It also has wetlands, tree lined gorges and desert plains stretching flat and wide to the horizon. Perfect for nature lovers, bushwalker and adventurers, beautiful views and flowers to see. Flinders Ranges is truely one of the most beautiful ranges of Australia.
The most distinctive landmark is Wilpena Pound, shape of a basin, in the middle of Flinders ranges, the highest peak in the ranges is St Mary Peak (1170m). Flinders Ranges National Park, Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park and Mount remarkable National Park lies within the Ranges.
Southern part of the ranges are popular for the Pichi Richi scenic railway. Norther part of the ranges has many large salt lakes like: Lake Eyre is the largest one, other are: Lake Torrens, Lake Frome and Lake Gairdner. Most of the times of the year these lakes are without water, dry and empty. Only filled when there is a heavy rain.
